Why I chose engineering. Why it matters.
Engineering is not a job. It is a responsibility.
Every structure built, every material chosen, every design decision made โ these have consequences that outlast the engineer who made them. The buildings we construct today will stand for 50, 100 years. The concrete we pour will either contribute to a warming planet or help slow it down. That is not a small thing.
My thesis on low-carbon cementitious systems was not just an academic exercise. It was my first real contribution to one of the most important engineering challenges of our generation: how do we build the infrastructure that growing populations need, without destroying the environment those populations depend on?
I chose civil engineering because it sits at the intersection of human need and technical possibility. Bridges connect communities. Roads open economies. Sustainable materials mean the next generation inherits a world that still works.
That is the work I want to do. Not just competently โ but with intention.

โ Robert SwanMy honours thesis at Macquarie University investigated supplementary cementitious materials โ fly ash, GGBFS, and silica fume โ as low-carbon replacements for Portland cement clinker. Testing 150+ mix variations and nominated for Greatest Commercial Development Potential, the research demonstrated that structural performance and environmental responsibility are not in conflict. Sustainable construction is one of the defining engineering challenges of this generation, and it sits at the centre of my technical identity.
Giving back has been a constant thread across my life. As a crowdfund raiser for Youth's Voice Foundation in Chattogram, Bangladesh, I coordinated campaigns delivering winter clothing to underprivileged communities. As a volunteer educator with the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Foundation, I delivered foundational literacy and numeracy lessons to orphaned children aged 5โ10. These experiences ground me in what engineering is ultimately for โ people.
Throughout high school I participated in Round Square conferences, exploring the 12 Discoveries of Round Square across their six IDEALS themes: Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Adventure, Leadership, and Service. These conferences connected me with students and perspectives from across the world, shaping how I think about collaboration, cultural intelligence, and the engineer's responsibility to a global community โ not just a local one.
